Traffic Stops

Measurement Period: 2021
This indicator shows the number of traffic stops by drivers' county of residence.

Why is this important?

According to the United States Bureau of Justice Statistics, the most common reason for contact with a police officer is being a driver in a traffic stop. A traffic stop is a detention of a driver of a vehicle by police to investigate a possible violation of law. Traffic stops help police ensure public safety. However, collecting and reviewing data on routine traffic stops can shed light on racial and gender profiling within a community. According to the Prison Policy Initiative, Police-Public Contact Survey data shows that women are less likely to be stopped than men, and Black drivers are more likely to be stopped than drivers of other races and ethnicities (including white drivers).

The American Psychological Association found the victim effects of racial profiling include post-traumatic stress disorder and other stress-related disorders, perceptions of race-related threats and failure to use available community resources. Research psychologists have also looked at the effects of racial profiling on the broader community and found confirmation of feelings of racism, fear and financial costs.
